December 31. I am heading to Silkeborg to celebrate the New Year with my friend. Since I did not have a car, I had to figure out all the bus routes beforehand. I had to go to Randers first, and then from the Randers bus station, I caught the bus to Silkeborg. I remember arriving in Randers with some time to spare, so I stopped at a cafe for a hot drink. I do not remember if it was coffee or hot cocoa, but it was definitely something hot because it was freezing outside, and I really loved cocoa back then.
Then I jumped on the bus that delivered me to Silkeborg. My friend was supposed to pick me up, but he was running late, so I spent a solid hour just wandering around the Silkeborg bus station.
Then Roma came and picked me up. I met this guy at a gig where I was making coffee on a mobile coffee car, and he was my shift partner there. Surprisingly, he was also moving to Denmark, just about six months earlier than me. We even lived in almost the same district and knew a lot of the same people, though somehow I had never seen him before back home.
Now I was in the car with him heading to his house to celebrate the New Year. We wandered around nighttime Silkeborg for a bit before going back to his place, where he had quite a few guests over. We waited for midnight, and boom, we were in 2014—New Year!
Afterward, we went back out into Silkeborg to see the fireworks. There were lots of people, especially students.
The next morning, January 1, we drove to Aarhus. Aarhus was super empty with everyone still asleep. First, we went to the deer park.
Back then, you could feed them, and it was totally normal to bring a bag of carrots with you. The animals would walk right up to you as soon as they saw you.
Next, we went to the Old Town. It was completely empty—usually very crowded, but we had the whole place entirely to ourselves.
In the end, we headed down to the bay where hundreds of boats and yachts were parked, offering a cool view of Aarhus. That was the beginning of 2014, a year that would bring a lot of surprises, and here we are!
